Stavroula
F. Tsinorema is Associate Professor of Philosophy in the
Department of Philosophy and Social Studies of University of Crete,
Head of the Division of Philosophy and Director of the Joint
Graduate Programme “Philosophy:
Science, Values and Society” of the above Department. She has
been Director of the Interdepartmental
Graduate Programme “Bioethics” since
its establishment in 2003. She has acted twice as Head of the above
Department (2000-02, 2002-04). She obtained a First Class Honours
Degree in Philosophy from the Department of Philosophy, University
of Athens (1979), then her M.A. in Moral and Social Philosophy
from the University of Exeter (1980) and her Ph.D. in Moral Philosophy
from the same University (1983). During her doctoral studies, she
held an award from the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals,
UK (1980- 1981) and an Exeter University Postgraduate Scholarship
(1981- 1983). While a Visiting Fellow in the Center for the History
and Philosophy of Science of the University of Pittsburgh, she
was a holder of A.K. Mellon Foundation Fellowship (1990). She has
served on a number of international conference organizing and programme
committees, most recently, on the International Scientific Committee
of the 9th World Congress of Bioethics (Rijeka, Croatia, September
3rd-8th, 2008) and as chair and paper referee at the XXII World
Congress of Philosophy (Seoul, Korea, July 30th- August 5th 2008).
She has
more than sixty publications in moral and social philosophy, bioethics,
epistemology, philosophy of language and mind. Her publications also
include comparative studies in analytic and continental philosophy.
She is co-editor of Philosophy and the Many
Faces of Science, Rowman
and Littlefield Publishers Inc., New York and London, 1998. Her research
interests include the epistemology of value-concepts, normativity
and rule-following, theories of rationality, ethics of research,
theoretical and epistemological issues in bioethics. She is a member
of the Editorial Board of the academic journals, International
Studies in the Philosophy of Science (Routledge), Deucalion:
Biannual Journal for Philosophical Research and Critique, Axiologica:
Biannual Journal for Social and Philosophical Theory and Critique, and Editor-in-Chief
of the e-journal Review
of Bioethics. She has acted as member of the National Council
for Research and Technology of the Greek Ministry of Development
(2008-2009). She is currently Deputy Head of the Department of
Philosophy and Social Studies, member of the Research Committee
of the University of Crete (2007- ) and member of the National
Committee for Deontology of the National Organisation for Medicines,
Ministry of Health (2010- ).
